Women’s networking group is expanding
News photo by Dawn Wivell The Women in Business Social Networking group met at Keystone Villa in Douglassville Jan. 24. The group’s next meeting is scheduled for Feb. 28. The group was started in 2007.
More than 30 women attended the Women in Business Social Networking “Come out for Lunch – Simply Networking” on Jan. 24 at the Keystone Villa in Douglassville. From a variety of backgrounds – a doll dress maker to a banker – the group of women gathered to meet other women and to share information about their businesses.
WBSN was started in Aug. 2007, but didn’t take off as founder Melissa Aidukas had expected. She began reorganizing the group in Jan. 2012. With an advisory board that includes a lawyer, accountant, event planner, and more, Aidukas expects to begin accepting formal memberships in the spring. She says membership will be exclusive - only one accountant, one lawyer, etc. will be accepted.
The purpose of WBSN, according to Aidukas, is to help support women and help the community.
“Through this networking group for women, we can utilize one another’s strengths [to motivate and help achieve goals],” she said. Aidukas foresees the group of women encouraging one another and building friendships.
The next networking lunch is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 28 at 12:15 p.m. at the Keystone Villa. The event will feature Certified Public Accountant Priscila Santos, who will speak about 2012 Tax Updates. Participants will have the opportunity to enjoy a good meal, meet new people, and give a 60-second “elevator pitch” about their business.
WBSN is also planning to continue its quarterly women’s lecture series that will include topics such as “How to Operate a Small Business.” Previous topics included “How to boost your immune system” and “Organization 101.” The group will also hold a regular Business Presentation Loop that will be hosted by different WBSN members.
WBSN has sponsored a pony at the Daniel Boone Optimist Club’s Community Days for the past two years and a back to school drive to raise money for school supplies. A fashion show – “The Evolution of Fashion”- is scheduled for May 20 for Career Wardrobe, a nonprofit organization that provides professional work attire, educational programs, and networking opportunity to women in transition. Its mission is to empower women by providing programs that “inspire the confidence necessary to achieve self-sufficiency and pursue a productive career.”
